Public Act 123, Property Foreclosure Time Line

 

 

July/December 2002:
2002 property taxes billed by City, Village, or Township Treasurer.

 

March 1, 2003:
Unpaid 2002 property taxes are forwarded to
County Treasurer for collection. An administrative fee of 4% and interest of 1% per month are added.

 

October 1, 2003:
A $15.00 fee is added to each parcel still unpaid.

 

March 1, 2004:
Property is forfeited to
County Treasurer. A minimum $193.00 fee is added and interest is increased to 1.5% per month, back to the date the taxes originally became delinquent.

 

April 1, 2004:
An additional fee is added for site inspection and sale preparation work.

 

December 1, 2004:
An additional fee may be added for certified mailing and publication costs.

 

March 1, 2005:
Circuit Court enters a judgment of foreclosure. From the date of this judgment, property owners have 21 days to pay the taxes.

 

March 22, 2005:
All taxpayer redemption rights expire. The property is now owned by the County or the State.

 

September and November, 2005:
Property is sold at public auction.
